Six hairdressers from across the UK have been chosen to become Schwarzkopf Professional’s 2018 Shaping Futures volunteers. Destined for a trip of a lifetime, they will head to the Philippines to teach disadvantaged young people hairdressing skills, which in turn will lead to life enhancing skills, and new careers away from poverty and hardship.
Annabelle Taylor, Indy Burmi, Raj Sethi Bamra, Sarah Franklin, Barbara Deakin and Lauren Scott will travel to an SOS Children’s Village in the Philippines at the end of the August, accompanied by Janet Maitland, the UK Ambassador for Shaping Futures and a technician from Schwarzkopf Professional.
While there, the volunteers they will deliver training for up to 25 young people and adults who are currently living in the Village. They will be taught how to cut, colour and style hair, after which they will be offered further training or employment opportunities with local salons.
Shaping Futures has been running since 2009, and this is the first year the UK team will be visiting the Philippines – a country Janet has long been hoping to team up with - following many successful years partnering with SOS Children’s Villages in India.
Speaking further, Janet said, “I am so exciting to be traveling to the Philippines with such amazing people. Of the six volunteers, two have experienced a Shaping Futures adventure before. Raj and Sarah volunteered several years ago at villages in Chennai and Kolkata; experiences which have stayed with them and helped to shape their own futures. And while the other four our new to the initiative, I just know they’ll have such a positive impact on the lives of these young people. The Philippines will be a whole new chapter for Shaping Futures and I for one, cannot wait!”
Each volunteer has been asked to fundraise £1500 for the SOS Children’s Villages charity and the additional money needed to cover their expenses.
Kay Brady, National PPS Manager UK & IRE for Schwarzkopf Professional, said “It’s because of the passion, dedication and spirit of people like Janet, Annabelle, Lauren, Raj, Indy, Barbara and Sarah that we are able to run Shaping Futures, and offer young people a chance of a new life.
“This programme is incredibly important and over the past nine years, we’ve helped hundreds of youngsters from the SOS Children’s Villages fulfil their dreams and aspirations. We are incredibly proud of all the people involved in the initiative, but especially the young people who fight every day to create their own futures; they are inspirations to us all.”
The volunteers will all come together again on the 18th June for a full Training Day in Durham, where they will officially begin their Shaping Futures adventure.
